Kraft Heinz Co. announced Wednesday that it will be bringing dairy-free mac and cheese to the U.S. for the first time. The company claims that the new recipe is the same as its 85-year-old original Mac & Cheese but uses ingredients such as fava beans protein and coconut oil.

The plant-based Kraft NotMac & Cheese will be available in U.S. supermarkets over the next few weeks. It was developed with Not Co., a Chicago-based startup that produces plant-based milk and burgers, among other products.

Last year, Kraft Heinz of Pittsburgh and Chicago formed a joint venture with Not Co. Kraft Heinz Not Co. has already launched non-dairy mayonnaise and cheese slices in the U.S. The company plans to expand its product line and start international distribution in the next year.

In 2021, Kraft Heinz will begin selling vegan macaroni & cheese in Australia. This is the first time that it’s being sold in the U.S.

Lucho Lopez May, CEO of Kraft Heinz Not Co., said that sales of macaroni-and-cheese products made from plant-based ingredients are exceeding those in the category. Less than 30% of customers purchase the product a second time, citing poor taste and texture.

Lopez-May stated that Kraft Heinz Not Co. aims to satisfy consumers’ desire for familiar foods made from plant-based ingredients without forcing them to change their eating habits. Kraft sells over 1 million boxes of original Mac & Cheese each day.

NotMac&Cheese is now available in original and white cheddar flavors.
