See what Buddy the Elf is doing around our house Dec 1 – 24 : Check out the Elf on the Shelf Ideas here.
For the past few weeks I’ve been trying to learn how to knit. I’ve mastered the casting on. Everything after that is still questionable if I am doing anything right. I’ve been just trying to do the basic knit and purl techniques alternating each row. Unfortunately, I haven’t made the effort to dedicate a long period of time to sitting and knitting. Realistically it’s about 20 minutes at a time. And I’m just learning. So I forget what stitch I’m on or where I left off, or my yarn is too fuzzy and I drop a stitch or pick up an extra (somehow?!). Anyway, my point is — my soon to be 6 year old knows that I’m lacking the proficient knitting skills to finish her a presentable scarf.
So I concocted the idea that Buddy would knit himself a scarf (because ultimately, ‘Mom could never pull this off”) as his nightly adventure. So I used the same technique but on a much smaller scale. Thank the Lord for his little self I didn’t have to do much (although it took me what seemed like forever to complete) length and width to complete it. I just used my smallest needles and cast on 5 stitches and alternated the knit then purl until it was the desired length I wanted.
I then put him on the ledge of the kitchen counter and sat him in a circle loom that we had picked up at Hobby Lobby and threw my other yarns around him. Would you believe me if I told you it came out SO perfect! This amazed my daughter that Buddy could knit better than me! At that time I didn’t know how to cast off so I left the scarf on the needles and there he was. Luckily there was an easy YouTube video (the next day) that I watched to learn how to cast off so Buddy could keep his scarf for future days and adventures.
The supplies needed to pull this off were:
- Buddy; our Elf on the Shelf & Elf on the Shelf book that came with him
- 5mm Knitting Needles
- Cardstock Paper for the Note
